Brothers for the Ballots: Empowering Student Voices at the University of Louisville

The Brothers for the Ballots initiative showcased the power of collective action as the Alpha Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the NAACP at the University of Louisville, and Vote Everywhere came together with a shared purpose: empowering students to understand, engage, and participate in the civic process. The event was “strengthened through meaningful collaboration with organizations dedicated to civic engagement and community empowerment,” bringing together education, advocacy, and hands‑on action. Through Alpha’s leadership, NAACP’s commitment to community impact, and Vote Everywhere’s on‑site voter registration support, students gained both the knowledge and the tools to make their voices heard in upcoming elections. This partnership demonstrated that when organizations unite around civic responsibility, they create lasting pathways for student leadership and democratic participation.

The NAACP Louisville Branch vehemently denounces the impeachment and removal of the first African American woman elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOUISVILLE, KY — The NAACP Louisville Branch strongly condemns the politically motivated effort to impeach Justice Pamela R. Goodwine, the first African American woman elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court.

Justice Goodwine’s 2024 election was a historic, decisive mandate from Kentucky voters. Her decades of service—from district court to circuit court, the Court of Appeals, and now the Supreme Court—reflect an exemplary record of integrity and public trust.

The Kentucky House’s decision to review a petition for her removal is an unjustified attack on a jurist whose credentials are unquestioned. The allegations of conflict of interest are baseless, and targeting a justice over a judicial vote threatens the independence of Kentucky’s courts and undermines the will of the electorate.

The NAACP Louisville Branch stands firmly with Justice Goodwine and urges the House to dismiss these meritless proceedings. We will not remain silent while partisan actions attempt to erode historic progress and a lifetime of service.

We especially thank our NAACP Youth Council and our college chapters at the University of Louisville and Simmons College of Kentucky for their leadership and energy throughout the day. We celebrate the many new members who joined, the generous donations received, and the positive coverage in the Louisville Defender. This momentum inspires us as we look forward to bringing this engagement model to more churches and communities across Louisville in 2026.
